Quiet Corner

We’re accustomed to noise, activity, entertainment, and urgency, that when stimulation is taken away, sitting still can make us uncomfortable. Sitting still, allows us the time to check in with ourselves. How do you feel? Find a quiet space, take a few minutes to focus on you. Listen to your body. Notice your heartbeat and breathing. Do you notice any discomfort? Sometimes, distractions can make us unaware of our body signals. Tension, aches, and soreness is the bodies way of communicating it needs time to rest. Our body needs to time to recover. Take 5-10 minutes, each day to log off distractions to allow your mind and body to relax.

Release your thoughts

It is important for us to take care of our mental health. Essentially, our thoughts can affect our lifestyle and self-image. Take time to reflect, to think deeply or carefully about your life. Bring self-awareness to the forefront of your mind. Ideas, suggestions, and information is constantly flying around in our head. We need to find somewhere for them to land. Think of a journal (or notebook) as a landing stripe. A journal helps to map out your thoughts. Allow the paper to take on the weight of your thoughts and unload the burden. If you’re not into writing, maybe record your thoughts as an audio file. Every phone comes with the audio recording app. Easily accessible whenever you need to record your thoughts.

Journal prompts:

  • Who am I? What are my character traits?
  • What am I passionate about? What are my desires?
  • How do I feel? What is my heart telling me?
  • Why? (Sometimes, writing out our thoughts will lead us to our why.)

Writing is a relationship that develops over time. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about discovery of self. Go at your own pace.

Close your eyes and listen

Diverse types of sounds can affect a person’s brain activity. Various types of melodies and rhythms can elicit different emotional responses. Ambient sounds can encourage creativity and focus or provide a sense of calmness and relaxation. Sometimes, I’ll play music in the background; jazz, classical music, instrumental or worship music. Most times, I’ll listen to the noise in my environment. Lay back and listen to the worlds soundtrack. You might even fall asleep, LOL!

Daily Meditation

Daily meditation improves on a positive outlook on life, enhance self-awareness, and improve clarity of thinking. There are a number of ways to meditate. I have really enjoyed using the Abide app to meditate. A biblical meditation to relax easier and alleviate stress while listening to Christ. Christian meditation of practicing and living a Biblical lifestyle. Meditation connects and empowers the mind and heart. Fill the mind with Gods word to discover peace and purpose. All the other distractions melt away. You can do it anywhere, anytime.

Discover and create

Open your mind to the idea that you want to be creative. It’s not necessarily about waiting for creativity to strike. Explore new ideas and experiences. Look at your everyday surroundings as if you are seeing them for the first time. My creative passion is writing. Or opt for something simple, like a coloring book. There are various apps of coloring book for adults. No need to purchase art supplies and it’s easily accessible. When you’re engrossed in something you love to do creatively, there is a natural flow and sense of peace.

I’d love to hear from you. Do you practice ways to slow down?

  1. Love your post! I think my favorite way to slow down and create a break time is just shutting off all electronics (tv, music) and just soak in the silence. I usually read a book or write a little, but just the quiet really helps reset my mind and spirit.

    1. Thank you. I totally agree. When I intentionally log off, I began to notice silence isn’t as bad as many say. I love it. Reading a good book with a cup of tea.

  2. Great ideas Tiffany! I am part of essential personnel on two jobs and I assist an elderly parent. The need to detox and unwind for the day is essential too.
