Homemade DIY Deodorant

For quite some time, I’ve slowly switch to natural skincare. I decided to use a homemade deodorant recipe. Making a nontoxic and organic alternative to conventional deodorant. Here’s a simple recipe with all-natural ingredients.

Deodorants vs. Antiperspirants

Deodorants are applied to the body to prevent body odor which cause bacterial breakdown of sweat (or perspiration) underneath the armpits.

Whereas, Antiperspirants are a type of deodorant that affect odor, to prevent sweating by clogging the pores.

I’ve tried many popular products. Only to learn, years later, majority of them are unhealthy. There are many reasons to opt for something gentler for your health than products with chemicals such as aluminum, parabens, perfumes, and their ability to clog pores.

This recipe is toxin free and it won’t irritate your skin. Plus, it only has 4 ingredients:

  1. Mango butter (prevents inflammation and eliminates itchy, dry skin)
  2. Coconut oil (moisturizing and antibacterial)
  3. Arrowroot powder (absorbs oils and thickens)
  4. Baking soda (absorbs and neutralizes odors)

Its smooth and creamy, similar to a body butter. This will reduce the odor-causing bacteria the natural way. Takes less than a few minutes to make. Simple!

This recipe is very easy to modify. Add more or less coconut oil for desired consistency. Maybe use a different oil or butter, like Olive Oil and Shea butter. For a natural fragrance, try adding essential oils. For sensitive skin, reduce the baking soda or omit it.

Make this recipe your own. I haven’t used any other deodorant and makes for a lovely gift as well.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:

HOW TO MAKE:

Step 1:

Melt Mango Butter and coconut oil (if hardened), by using the double boiler method. You can place a glass measuring cup in hot water.

Step 2:

While your Mango butter and coconut oil is infusing, combine Arrowroot (or starch) and baking soda in a small bowl.

Step 3:

Remove oils from the heat, and immediately add to the Baking Soda and Arrowroot Powder mixture. Stir well to combine ingredients evenly, to ensure there are no clumps

Step 4:

Wait 15 minutes, then add in your favorite essential oils. I love the smell of Lavender Essential Oil and Tea Tree Essential Oil. Make sure to stir again for one to two minutes.

Step 5:

Transfer to container of choice (2-4oz glass jar works fine). Let it completely cool for a few hours. Store in a cool, dry place.

To use: simply glide your fingers as you would a body butter and apply to your underarm! It is firm and feels creamy.
