The 12 Minute Rule when Life is Busy

Every season is a precious gift from the Lord. When reading God’s Word, we should try our best to establish a routine. As we spend time with the Lord, we become sensitive to His presence in every part of our life. Not so we can get a pat on the back or it will make us look good in God’s eyes. Our hearts desire to draw near to Christ but veer off toward something else that captures our attention. There is another way we can redirect our focus on Christ. I hope today’s post will encourage you to make room for God.

Reading the Bible is not something we do from a legalistic stance. We do it because scripture says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Find a time of day that works best for you in your current season. It doesn’t have to be early in the morning. Find a moment in the afternoon or evening to spend alone time in the Word. Consider doing it with your husband, children, or neighbor. The goal is to sit with God and enjoy this sacred experience. Try the 12-minute rule: read, meditate, and pray.

  • Great for new believers or anyone curious about prayer
  • Easy to travel in a purse, backpack, or lunch bag
  • I love to sit with my little one and read the prayers.
  • Helpful in times I experience frustration or stress

Read the Word. Pick a chapter, scripture, or verse and camp in it for 4 minutes. Read the passage as often and as many days as needed—no need to rush the process. Seeking God is a delightful journey.

Meditate on the passage. Spend the next 4 minutes to reflect and process what you’ve read. Jot down any notes or questions you may have about the text. I will look up the definition of words for more clarity and understanding. Think deeply about each word and grow in God’s truth.

Pray to God. Spend the last 4 minutes seeking God’s wisdom. You can even use the scripture to pray if you struggle with speaking words. Consider praying before, during, and after reading the Bible to engage and be led by the Holy Spirit. I pray you will grow and be amazed by who God is.

“The heart cannot love, what the mind does not know.”

JEN WILKIN

God is the author of the Bible, and only the truth it contains will lead people to true happiness. My hope is that you will be reminded to love God’s Word with all your heart, mind, and strength.

By His Grace,
